A long, long, final round. In an 80 minute game, Jaden had less than a minute on the clock at the end of his match. Although the team lost this round, they should be very proud their performance. With 3 draws across the top 3 boards against the competition's silver medallists, and a very narrow loss on board 4 against a very strong opponent, the team can be very proud of their efforts today. We also won every single reserves match over the weekend - very well done.
The result in the final round is shown in the attached link. Division 1 Reserves There will be a full report here later this week with another 'find the chess piece' photo of the team. Well played Bury Knights!!!

Eventually order was restored when it turned out that it was all a clever plan to demonstrate the importance of developing pieces. It finished all square, although Jane very nearly delivered a knock out finish. It is a great video - click on the image below for a link to the YouTube video.
Today saw the latest Train and Play event held by Suffolk Junior Chess. Thank you to all 22 players who took part in this event - we loved having you there are we are really grateful to all the parents who stayed with you - thank you. Thank you also to our coaches - Mario Saenz de Villaverde and Fide Master Andy Lewis. All the players had a great introduction to chess play from Andy Lewis. They were then split into 3 groups, with the more experienced players enjoying advanced tips and advice from Andy Lewis, while the less experienced players learned more about how to use chess openings from Mario and also had a session where they learned about how chess tournaments work and what to watch out for. All the players had a great time while learning a lot, and lunchtime came in no time at all. ![]() After lunch they all took part in a chess tournament where they were split into 3 groups divided roughly on ability - above is a photo of the tournament. There was some good chess and everyone had fun, with several playing in their first tournament. Tom Roy and Rowan Kent both played very well and had a tight finish to the deciding match in the top group (Section 1), with Tom edging it to win the trophy having won all 3 games. Their endgame is shown in the photo below right (Tom is to the left and playing with the black pieces). William Gu and Toby Martin also put strong performances, both scoring 2/3, but losing out to Rowan on Sum of Progressive Scores. In Section 2, there was a tight finish between Jonathan Painter (2.5/3), Owen Free and Isaac Kim (both 2/3), with Jonathan taking the trophy and Owen taking the runner-up position on Sum of Progressive scores. In the third section, an excellent performance saw Eniko Stuller emerge victorious with 3/3, and with Jake Locking pipping Hamilton Lowdell and Jagoda Napieraj to 2nd place on Sum of Progressive scores having all scored 2/3. One stand-out performance was by William Gu, who was playing in his first tournament and scored 2/3, narrowly losing a close game against the experienced Rowan Kent. William earned himself a book of chess puzzles for his efforts. The results were as follows, with a link at the bottom to the full results: Section 1: 1st Tom Roy (3/3) 2nd Rowan Kent (2/3) 3rd William Gu (2/3) Section 2: 1st Jonathan Painter (2.5/3) 2nd Owen Free (2/3) 3rd Isaac Kim (2/3) Section 3: 1st Eniko Stuller (3/3) 2nd Jake Locking (2/3) 3rd Hamilton Lowdell (2/3) Full results can be found at this link. |
